Install a home safety alarm system to secure your home against intruders and keep the door from your garage to your home locked at all times. It is just like any other entryway. Never answer your door to an unexpected visitor. Call out to them through the doorway and ask for identification to be slipped under your door.

When you get identification from all unknown callers and service people who may come to your door call the company to confirm their identity. Security doors must be installed, particularly if you live on your own. A good site that manufactures security doors is pagedoors.com who is specialist manufacturers and suppliers of steel security doors and related products.

If the stranger at your door has no identification, take down the name of the company where they are from and call them immediately to substantiate their identity. If the person won’t give you any information and still insists on your opening the door to them, call 000 without hesitation. OzFreeOnline.com has hundreds of classifieds and among these are security doors and screens, which can be fitted by experts.

Don’t go home under any circumstances. This will only help the person know exactly where you live. It is unwise to label your keys with your name, address and telephone number. Not only could the person enter your home, but they would also be able to start a campaign of ‘crank calls’ and phone you at any time, day, or night.

If you do lose your keys, have a spare set at home and leave another set with a family member or someone you can trust. Change the locks on all your doors if you feel uncomfortable. OzFreeOnline.com has a great classified section where to search all you need to do is join, log in and begin to browse all the categories. At an online site called spec-net.com.au you can find all types of security locks for your home. They have been making security door locks in Australia for over twenty years.

It is a sad fact that personal safety is of the greatest importance these days. Unfortunately, help is not always to be found, so taking charge of your own personal safety is the first step to keeping yourself out of danger. There are a number of personal devices that can be found in various stores who supply security cameras, alarms and appliances, that help increase your personal safety, but simple common sense behaviour is the best place to start.

Hang your purse over your shoulder and across your body and hold it to your chest so it cannot be snatched. If you cannot do that, be prepared to let go of your purse immediately if someone grabs it, so that you will not be pushed to the ground and injured. Personal safety alarms can be purchased from most outlets, but I bought one from Avon, at avon.com.au, which I have been carrying with me for the last four years. Thankfully, I have never had to use it, and it gives me security when I am out at night.

First of all, the most important factor is that for a true antique to qualify as an antique, is time. The recommended time of a true antique is 100 years old, or more. Near antiques are from 75 to 99 years old, and then there are the items known merely as vintage that are 25 to 74 years old, which are from the 40s, 50s and into the 60s. Some of these items may just be ‘kitsch’ and their ‘trend’ may only last a short time, so this is another reason to be sure of what you want to collect. Is it just for you, or do you want to deal in the market?

There are elements to look for when shopping for an antique and the most important is whether you like it. Take a good look at the overall condition of the piece. Is it badly scratched, broken or cracked? Remember that this may devalue the piece considerably. Is it still solid on its legs, wobbly, or in need of restoration? Remembering that sympathetic restoration can cost a small fortune, you will have to make sure that the antique you buy is not going to owe you money if you want to sell it to another buyer.

It is wise to buy yourself a notebook, subscribe to an antique magazine, and find out where to find good antiques at a good price. Look in the attics and basements of friends and family, try yard sales, and visit general antique and deceased estate auctions as possible to see how quickly you can begin building your antique collection.

If you are fortunate enough to have lots to spend, you may choose to locate items in ‘mint’ condition. However, it is always best to research before you buy. In any case, try to learn as much as you can about the certain type of collectible or antique: where it comes from, the style or era, the maker, artist or designer.

Antiques are objects, which have reached an age that makes them a witness of a previous era in human society. The item is generally a collectible or other item, which is old (at least 100 years old) and is collected or desirable because of its rarity, condition, utility, or other unique features.

Of course, newer items can also be quite valuable; if you know how to define them. What you must beware of is ‘counterfeit’ pieces. However, the last defining feature of an antique or collectible item is that it has value for someone, somewhere, who wants very much to buy it.
