Caution to Advertisers: Scammers Targeting Classifieds
Online classified ads have been a great way to earn money for several sellers of new and used items. However, they need to be wary of who they deal with. Scammers have several modus operandi to dupe online seller of their money and goods.
The Better Business Bureau has reported the proliferation of the Overpayment scam. In this scenario, the scammer uses a fake check that is difficult to tell from a real one. “It can be practically impossible to tell a fake check from a real one using only the naked eye because fake checks can be printed in full color and even include watermarks,” said Paula Fleming, BBB spokesperson.
In the Overpayment Scheme, the victim who sells via an online classified ads site is contacted by the scammer to show interest in the product. The scammer then asks to pay by check and sends in a fake one that is over the amount the seller is asking for. The seller is told that it was a mistake and asks that the overpayment be wired back to the sender or to a shipping company.
This is not the only type of scam “buyers” of online classified listings are using to make money from unsuspecting sellers.
